The Flick

Studio Play: May 9-25, 2025

Written by Annie Baker

In a dilapidated movie theater nestled in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees diligently mop the floors and tend to one of the few remaining 35mm film projectors in the state. Amidst the dimly lit aisles and flickering screens of lackluster, second-run movies, their mundane struggles and poignant heartbreaks unfold, captivating audiences more than the films themselves. With a sharp wit and poignant observation, “The Flick” offers a compelling exploration of authenticity in a rapidly evolving world. Don’t miss this hilarious yet deeply touching portrayal of life’s everyday struggles and triumphs.

Playwrights Horizons, Inc., New York City, commissioned and produced the World Premiere of THE FLICK Off-Broadway in 2013.

“The Flick” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

FAQ about The Flick

How long is it?
Around 2.5 hours, with a 15 minute intermission. This show is written to be slow moving, with pauses dictated by the script, to help you get a sense of the characters and their lives.

Adult Language?
This would be rated R as a movie, primarily for language. The characters are all fairly young, and the dialogue is written very realistically. If you don’t care to hear that kind of language, you should definitely skip this one. It also covers some topics that might be uncomfortable for some people, including (but not limited to) depression, suicide, disabilities, and racism.

Who is this show for?
If you were really into indie movies —particularly from the late 90s — and love slow moving, realistic stories, with natural dialogue and character development, that explores the small moments between people just living their normal lives, this is the kind of play that might appeal to you. It is not a play with a lot of big dramatic moments or events, and it takes its time. We recognize that will not appeal to a lot of people in our audiences, but this is for the people who do enjoy this kind of show.
